Hey everybody, just thought I would bring up the topic of the Hammer throw, I honestly think hammer first before any other throw now, people also call a close pass hammer throw a scooper. I find that it is almost impossible to cover since you can even throw it behind your head and people cant reach inward to stop a pass.

Anyone have any stories or tips on hammer throws that would be awesome!

I find that marking with your man depends on the situation you are in. For example, if your facing an opponent that likes to use nice tight passing, you should play in front of your man or right on his or her side to slap the Frisbee. Or if the team your playing likes to Huck the Frisbee far, play behind your man so that if its going farther then the receiver is standing you already have the upper hand by having a few steps ahead of the player, or if its heading towards the player you can run into or ahead the player for the interception.

Hi,
I'm quite new to ultimate but I'm very fond of it and I would like to get tips to train a team. I manage to become responsible of my University's Team but still miss some basics about how to train a ultimate team.
We have been playing for a year now but we only have "mastered" (if I may say) the "force" (thanks for the site).
What do you think we should work on now ?

Thank you again for your site which is very useful to me !

Are you asking if the way you throw a forearm is different?
The forearm is my favorite throw and my best. It is more of a wrist snap throw with a little arm throw in the mix. The section in the handbook help alot of my friends get their forearms to be good enough that they can toss it in thier throwing rotation without worrying to much. I feel like it is definatly a important throw in ultimate and once you master it you will find it more comfortable than throwing a backhand.

You can be as close as a disc space from the thrower. You can't circle the thrower with your arms either.

You can refer to this rule if they don't believe you:)

11th edition rule:

XIV.B.c Disc-space: If a line between any two points on the marker touches the thrower or is less than one disc diameter away from the torso or pivot of the thrower, it is a disc space violation. However, if this situation is caused solely by movement of the thrower, it is not a violation.

I also have a question regarding marking 1 on 1. Is there a certain distance that you must keep from your marker if he/she is in possession of the disc when you are playing defense?

I've always played close, as in right up against them. But some people insist that you must be no closer than 6 or 10 feet from them.

Is it just me, or are they trying to slip in a cheap play?

You might have an advantage being shorter, with regards to speed at least. Taller people tend to have slower first steps, so as a short person you should have an advantage on short cuts. This is a generalization though, there are really fast tall people and really slow short people :).

I would do a lot of hill/sprint training... jogging and biking won't do too much for speed. General leg exercises are good too. For Ultimate, a lot of it is agility and your ability to turn on a dime, so cutting exercises are good. Even the basic basketball line drill, run to a line about 1 meter away, touch the line, run back, run to a line 2 meters away, touch the line and run back etc... that's one of the best drills for speed, cutting endurance and agility. Best done with a partner or a team...

Keeping an eye on your man (face-to-face) will generally give you an idea of what is to come. Keep your eyes on him and where he is looking as well as your ears open for calls from teammates or opponents.

Turning your back on your man can allow him to dash off from you with a second head start, which is hard to catch up. Granted you are playing man to man defense, if a throw is put around another area in effort to lead your man, it may also draw another couple to that spot.

Playing deep versus playing shallow should also change your style. Playing close to the thrower, the plays are often in cross-field; that is, side to side. In this manner you need to have your head in a side to side orientation, constantly checking your man as well as the thrower, as the short game is a lot more fast paced and allows less time to react.

If you are playing deep, you have a little more leeway as far as timing, since the disc will take some time to float down and you can fight for position.

-If you'd like a definitive, keep your eye on your man. Reading him is a pseudo-equivalent of reading your thrower. But if you're suspicious of a throw, verify that his motions aren't lying to you and take a look at the thrower. You'll have to if you want to stop the play.

I have a question regarding marking 1 on 1.

When do I mark face-to-face and when I just run along with my mark? Which is better?

The problem with face-to-face marking is that I have an eye on my mark but don't really know whre the disc is and have to rely on my teammates yelling 'up!' and it sometimes can be very tricky.

The other style of marking is just running with the mark. I can see the disc all the time but it's easier to lose the guy I'm marking.

Need some feedback on that... Thanks.

I strongly agree with the 'know your receiver' comment. Not just for if they will cut back, but also how fast they run, how well they catch. I know many otherwise good throwers who have trouble adjusting their throws to match different receivers. A great throw that isn't caught wasn't great enough. If you are fortunate to only play with top players who catch everything near them then that isn't much of a problem. But for the rest of the world it is great to know your audience and adjust accordingly. Practicing throwing with the likely long cutters before the game is good for that.

Another thing to consider is the relative ability (speed, height, experience) of the person covering your intended target. If your receiver is clearly faster, for example, then you can lead them by throwing to the open space (watch for poachers). If your receiver is taller / jumps higher than the person covering them then other throws may work.

Disc Golf is a great suggestion. Some people like doing a body rotation and others can just flick it the full distance, it's usually best to do an inside out on both as this can maximize air time.

If you're talking about technique, then a common mistake with the backhand is doing a long wind up and looking away... and for any long throw telegraphing it (making it obvious) will set you up for a hand/foot block and an easier defensive read by the deep defenders.

In general, you can throw a backhand and flick long with very little body movement, mostly wrist and a bit of arm. I would aim for a lot of wrist control first and more control in high windy conditions.

As for making the throw connect, you should know your receiver and their body language... e.g. - are they cutting back in.

i recommend playing some disc golf, that works on your backhand a lot! but if your pulls are straight and don't drift, then you just need to work on your body motion to maximize your momentum.

I recently got picked as one of the pullers for the Australian U19 open team and was wondering what you think is the best technique is?

I don't really have a style, its pretty much just my Huck with a bit more float lol. But My shoulder has been acting up so I can't practice at the moment so what do you think is the best way for the pull to go up?

Hi Ultimate community. Welcome to the forum for the ultimatehandbook. I hope that this will serve the community well by promoting a question and answer style of discussion. I receive several questions about Ultimate all the time and many of them I cannot answer that well.

I don't intend on moderating this forum too much, aside from spam posts, but I will be moderating :).
